Palace Hotel, White Rock, Hastings.
This photograph (double click on photo for a better view) shows the Palace Hotel being used as a barracks during World War I when the Royal Flying Corps and RAF were stationed across the hotels and boarding houses of Hastings & St. Leonards.
The Palace Hotel was built between 1885 and 1886. It replaced the White Rock Brewery which was demolished the previous year. The French chateau style building was originally constructed as a hotel and then later converted into 15 luxury seafront apartments, with a language school and commercial units on the upper three floors. There were caves at the rear of the building.
The Palace Hotel remains one of the most iconic buildings in Hastings and is now known as Palace Chambers. There are still shops on the ground floor, as well as the Palace Bars now called the Pigs Paradise pub. The pub has a comedy club, the occasional beer festival, and live music events. On Tuesdays and Thursdays customers can take part in the Man vs Pig giant pork burger challenge that involves eating two 1/4 pound pork burgers , four rashers of bacon, two sausages, two hash browns, lashings of cheese, eight onion rings and a monster portion of cheesy chips. If you beat the challenge you get your money back in vouchers and your name on the wall of fame.
